Description

The project requested by FINA (International Swimming Federation) to cover the aquatic center “Maria Lenk” for the Olympic Games of Rio 2016. To adapt the building to the necessary conditions for the Olympic Games, BIS proposes a tensile structure of approximately 5.800m2.

The existing structure is formed by two symmetrical arches, which lodges the stands and the different facilities. A metallic cover, supported by steel trusses, protects spectators from the weather. The central space with the pools allowed the practice of outdoor activities.

The result was a tensile structure in PVC with double curvature tensioned by steel cables; the transverse wires are hooked on the cover trusses while the longitudinal cables are stayed through prefabricated footings. This is a light structure that respects the architecture of the existing building and whose form comes to terms with the curves of the stands and decks.
