DAVID GARCIA PhD

On the 10th of july, David Garcia obtained his PhD with the thesis “La excavación urbana y los edificios vecinos” (Urban excavation and neighboring buildings).

The main purpose of the thesis was to determine the possibility of structural damages to neighboring buildings when excavating in its surroundings. It has been tried to find a method that allows the design of a retaining wall considering as variable the sensibility of the building to imposed displacements.

It’s a double problem; on one hand, we want to know how the retaining wall that we are designing will behave and how it affects the soil around it, and on the other hand we want to assess the displacements and damages caused by the excavation in the existing building and its foundations. It is important to understand the sensibility of this buildings and its ductility capacity to accommodate displacements in both its structural and non-structural elements.
