The new building is “L” shaped and has 95m x 95m dimensions approx. The expansion joints minimize rheological effects of expansion and contraction in the structure due to temperature variation. They also separate the blocks enough to allow horizontal displacements in case of earthquake and wind actions.
The High Resolution Centre is composed of one floor below ground level, ground floor and two floors. The basement will be used for parking and other uses such as hospital archive, stores, staff changing rooms, etc. On the ground floor is the access and cafeteria, management areas and recovery rooms, laboratories, X-ray area and a large storage area. On the first floor are the surgery rooms, the daycare hospital and a first block of consultation rooms. In the upper floor there is the rest of the consultation area and a large area devoted to facilities. The uses are very different within the same floor and, in most cases, the loads on the decks are high.
