The new IESS general hospital in Manta has an area of 3ha (approx.). Given the magnitude of the set, it has been divided into 10 blocks separated by expansion joints. Each of them can be constructed individually as its structural is independent. The joint between blocks varies between 10 and 17cm.
The structural system consists of steel frames (formed by columns, beams and roof trusses) braced in the horizontal plane by the composite steel deck or tension bars in the roof. In order to control lateral displacement, multiple stiffening bracings are provided in the vertical and horizontal planes.
The axes modulation is quite uniform, which gives a uniform load distribution in all the beams and columns. However, the structural spans that are planned are relatively large, 14 x 7m, so at the foundations level, reactions are high. The foundation is made with concrete footings but in the cases that the resistant soil layer is more deep, non-reinforced concrete is used to arrive deeper.
